Well, here it is; my first feature-length score. This was the beginning of a number of collaborations I would enjoy with indie filmmaker Aaron Greer (THE STONE SISTERS: EXODUS). I was very green at the time and had only been composing music for film for a very short while. However, I was keen. Despite my extremely limited experience and very short résumé, Aaron invited me aboard and I had a great time working with him.
GATEKEEPER is a science-fiction action thriller, showcasing the classic battle between good and evil within a lighthearted and fun storyline. Aaron's vision of the film was ambitious to say the least, and my music had to try and match the epic tone he had in mind for the music. The film also needed to be heavily scored. To be honest, I don't think a lot of what I did is particularly good. I had little experience at the time, so I just did the best I could with the limited resources at my disposal. In an effort to try and make a big, epic soundtrack, I chucked everything I could think of into the mix - thundering taiko drums, choir, brooding strings for the villains, crashing cymbals, electronics, the lot. I am of the opinion that I overdid things somewhat, but there are one or two moments in this that I still like today.
This new album release has been completely remixed from the original 24-bit multitrack masters and contains around 80% of the total amount of music that I wrote for the film. I took the liberty of correcting some performance errors and tweaking the odd volume issue here and there, but this -- despite its faults -- is the best the music has ever sounded. I hope you find something to enjoy here; the score is both a product of its time and a reminder of my early efforts, and for those reasons alone I feel it is worth preserving here.
