Making its premiere release, this is my score to the TV sitcom pilot DIVIDED STATES that I worked on in 2019. I wrote three theme variations, and did a bunch of alternate mixes and rewrites; it was difficult for the director and I to nail down the musical "feel" of the show's world. In total, I composed 52 pieces of music, around 18 of which ended up in the final show.

This album generally presents the score for DIVIDED STATES as I originally intended, followed by a selection of bonus tracks that I feel provide some insight into the various directions that we initially tried taking the score.

Producer and director John Goshorn was kind enough to supply these comments about the project in February 2024:

"When I produced and directed Divided States, it was a challenge on a number of levels. I'd never directed TV. I'd never directed comedy. The specific material required a very specific tone, but also changed tone frequently. There was a mock TV commercial and a mock morning show report within the cold open. At least as much as any other crew member's contributions, Gavin's music pulled together these disparate elements into something that still felt intentional.

"And musically, Gavin succeeded at a similar challenge: pulling together a variety of disparate musical influences to both accent specific moments in the episode, while also providing unifying motifs. The result is a funky groove that hints at the New South setting without becoming caricature, all while highlighting the absurdity of the show's (mostly) well-intentioned characters who take themselves far too seriously."
